Guns N Roses Use Your Illusion Vol 2
Giving his design for Use Your Illusion II a maudlin purple-and-blue colourway, artist Mark Kostabi captured the downbeat mood of the album’s power ballads, including Yesterdays, Estranged, an alternate version of Don’t Cry and a cover of Bob Dylan’s Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door. Use Your Illusion I might have come out fighting, with songs such as Right Next Door To Hell, Back Off Bitch and a cover of Paul McCartney’s Live And Let Die, but it’s II that arguably best illustrates where the initial GNR line-up were at this point in their career: on the brink of dissolution. Kostabi’s rendering of a detail from Raphael’s early 16th-century painting The School Of Athens perfectly evokes the end of an era
