Queen Hot SpaceThe Flood Gallery
Queen’s 10th studio album was a marked departure from their past – both musically and stylistically. Seeing the group shift away from their rock roots, it nevertheless contained Under Pressure, their chart-topping collaboration with David Bowie. For its cover, Freddie Mercury put his Art And Graphic Design diploma to use, conceiving of the album’s sleeve with a nod to Andy Warhol’s famous Marilyn Monroe prints. The individual stencils of the bandmembers’ faces, each in their own coloured squares, have gone on to influence a number of other album artworks (most notably Blur’s The Best Of), while a complete set of the alleged original Hot Space artwork sold on eBay for over £1,000 in 2013.
