Queen - Queen II
When it came time to design the artwork for their second album, Queen wanted to capture the zeitgeist and enlisted legendary glam rock photographer Mick Rock to photograph them. Fresh from shooting transformative images of the likes of David Bowie, Lou Reed and Iggy Pop, Rock knew he had to come up with something grand to match Queen’s ambition. Taking inspiration from an atmospheric still of Marline Dietrich in Shanghai Express, he framed the group in their now-iconic diamond formation, with Freddie Mercury in the centre, re-enacting Dietrich’s pose. Mercury immediately understood its power, but the rest of the band worried that the results were pretentious. Rock convinced them otherwise: it gave them the gravitas their work warranted. Now seen as the group’s defining image, they reused the pose for their groundbreaking promo video for Bohemian Rhapsody.
